June Newsletter

Teacher’s Message
Two Additions to Room 6
Lindsey Castiglione who is a graduate student from Point Loma Nazerene University will work in our classroom for the next month. The first part of Miss “C’s” assignment is to work closely with me then she will be responsible for classroom management and curriculum instruction. Miss “C” and I will plan instruction so that curriculum instruction is not interrupted. Please join us as we welcome Miss Castiglione to Johnson STEM.

Secondly, your child can earn Tiger Bucks
(toy money) by displaying appropriate behavior. Each Friday we will open the classroom store and your child my purchase items if she or he has earned enough money. Your child can earn 125 Tiger Bucks or more each week. Parents ask your child how much money she or he earned each day and keep track of the amount on a bar graph.

Character Education
Our character focus for the month of June is PATIENCE. Patience is being able to bear [or face} difficulties calmly and without complaint.

Curriculum
The health education program will provide students with skills, knowledge and understanding that will influence behavior relative to their physical and emotional needs. Emphasis is directed toward self-awareness, decision- making and coping action. The development of positive self-esteem, the ability to deal with real-life situations and health-enhancing behavior are paramount. Your child will have opportunities to show what he or she has learned using Thinking Maps.

Science
Our Unit of Study for Plants and Animals Module provide your child with experiences that heighten their awareness of the different ways that plants and animals meet their needs. They will observe and describe changes that occur as plants grow and organize their observations on a calendar and in a notebook. They build a terrarium and provide for the need of both plants and animals living together in a classroom habitat. Also your child will  read about and view photographs and videos of plants and animals in different habitats.

Mathematics
In Topic 19, Measurement, your child will learn to estimate and measure length, volume, and weight. In Topic 20, Adding and Subtracting with Tens and Ones.  Your child will learn how to add and subtract 2-digit numbers. By this time of the year your child should be able to add and subtract single digit numbers with little difficulty. If your child is struggling to recall addition facts to 20 I recommend that you do flashcard activities with your child until he or she at least knows addition and subtraction facts to 20.

End -of -the Year Project

In early preparation for the end of the year, I am working on a project for the students in July. If you can contribute 25 small items that are all the same it would be very helpful. For example, if you decide to send pencils, please provide 25 of the same pencil. The idea is that at the end of the year we all give each other a good-bye gift. These gift bags will contain all the same items and will be a small contribution of items from each student and myself.

Thank you,
Mrs. Anderson

  1. This is a great modification to the newsletter that was sent home in June. Parents can look back at this and se what the classroom will be doing for the month and what they can do as parents to support their student's learning.
